Watch verbatim theatre in action

Each of our three groups of young people worked with an experienced drama facilitator to learn about and explore verbatim theatre techniques.

Using the recordings and transcripts from their interviews with older people living in local care homes, they created verbatim theatre pieces, each of which weaves together the experiences and stories of four care home residents.

A Level Drama students from Burntwood School in Tooting, interviewed Bobbie, Freda Iris and Kyra.  They used the transcripts of the oral history interviews and the audio recordings to devise a powerful and moving piece of Verbatim Theatre.

Year 12 Acting Diploma students from The Norwood School created this funny and touching piece of theatre based on the lives of Brian, Lilian and Sue.

Year 13 Acting Diploma students from The Norwood School created a gripping and uplifting performance piece based on John, Josephine, Loraine, Marc and Siddiqa’s interview transcripts.

Our short video created by Squeaky Pedal productions reveals the story of the project itself. Find out how we learnt oral history techniques, devised theatre, edited podcasts, and got to know 12 amazing older people in the process.

“I think the success of this project has been turning people’s life experiences and memories into something permanent. Our piece came together and resonated with the audience.”
